Anaheim cooling centers open during heat wave

Posted on Jun 19, 2016

With temperatures set to top 100 degrees Sunday and into next week, the city of Anaheim is opening cooling centers and reminding residents to conserve power wherever possible during our first summer heat wave.

On Sunday, the Downtown Anaheim Community Center will open to serve as a cooling center with other facilities available on Monday and Tuesday, when temperatures are forecast to peak. A list of libraries and community centers and their hours is below, along with a link to a flier.

Severe heat poses a risk to young children, the elderly, those working outdoors, athletes, pets and others. Remember to stay cool by taking some basic steps:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning
  • Wear thin, light clothes
  • Use sunscreen when going out
  • Avoid excessive physical activities during the hottest parts of the day
  • Don’t leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles or other closed, unventilated spaces

Wherever possible, Anaheim residents and businesses are asked to conserve power during the heat wave, which will place added demand on our power system.

Health concerns and considerations always come first. Where health is not at risk, consider some simple steps to reduce energy use, which benefits us all:

  • Adjust thermostats to 78 degrees or higher
  • Turn off unnecessary lights
  • Set your water heater no higher than 120 degrees
  • Use your major appliances late in the evening or early in the morning
  • Draw shades and blinds to keep rooms cool
  • Turn off pool pumps
