Binghamton,NY(WBNG Binghamton) Binghamton will hire an independent firm to look for savings in how the city uses energy.

The city is working with Troy & Banks Inc. to examine multiple energy accounts.

The company will look for any over-billing, clerical errors and rates that may not be in line with contracts.

According to the mayor’s office, the audit has the potential to save both the city and taxpayers money.

Troy & Banks has worked with dozens of municipalities and recouped millions of dollars of excess charges.

“One of the city’s major expenses has to do with energy and I thought that was an area that was ripe for potential of significant savings,” City of Binghamton Mayor (R) Rich David said.

Troy & Banks will be doing the audit and will only get paid if money is found.

The city is confident there will be savings after the audit, but the amount is still unclear.
